April 16th, 2018 – UDN – The final competition for business proposals for Sigfox “UnaBell” Smart Button – “UnaStar Episode I” completed recently. Among the 25 teams participated, 10 made it to the final competition, and five teams were selected as winners. The five winning teams will spend the next six months going into the POC phase (Proof of Concept), testing the market, and formulating the Go-to-Market strategy for their applications devised for UnaBell. The goal is to capture international business opportunities via UnaBiz.
As the competition winners become the new stars in the Internet of Things (IoT) industry, the UnaStar competition has sparked the market potential with various application ideas by the contestants. Topics covered in the competition include toilet cleaning, shopping for religious rituals and festivals, remote elderly care, forest preservation, and improving bus efficiency. The contestants incorporate the smart button with Sigfox IoT technology in their applications. Judges of the competition also commented on the creative ideas and possible directions for future commercialization. Their insights could help the contestants to enhance the business value of the proposals.
Among the five final winners, Qcare team proposed a Qbusstation application that aims to increase the usage of buses in rural areas. The proposal uses the smart button to improve efficiency of transportation in remote areas – such concept could be applied to transportation in tourist attractions and has the potential of incorporating big data analysis in the future. It is safe to say that Qbusstation is already a mature prototype of a commercial application. Another team, Bee, came up with an intuitive application reminding people to maintain the environment of public facilities such as public toilets. These two proposals are considered the most mature for a commercial launch.
General Manager of UnaBiz Taiwan, Mr. Phillipe Chiu, stressed that the UnaBell competition is fruitful because, in the company’s previous experiences, contestants of past competitions either have a strong technological background while lacking knowledge of the market or have great creative ideas that are not executable. Especially because IoT products could apply to vast areas, ideas proposed in past competitions often lack the momentum to move forward to the market. Therefore, UnaBiz decided to narrow it down by concentrating the creative energy to a competition theme. The latest attempt, UnaStar Episode I, has been a success. Mr. Chiu also said that the company will continue to organize events applying Sigfox IoT technology. Since Sigfox has extremely low energy consumption and could last as long as three years, application incorporating GPS technology may be promising – this may as well be the next project for UnaBiz.
Principal Ecosystem Manager of UnaBiz Taiwan, Mr. Philippe Tzou, pointed out that when UnaBiz launched the low energy-consumption IoT web services last year, the company already committed to “carrying partners from Taiwan to the global market, rather than profiting off of the Taiwan market.” This competition is the beginning of UnaBiz’s commitment; the company recognized the potential of entering the international stage in multiple proposals. Designed and manufactured in Taiwan, the UnaBell smart button is now on sale in more than 20 countries, and many international clients are waiting eagerly for innovative applications of the product. The newly crowned UnaStars will have to be ready for accommodating the market needs of the 45 countries using Sigfox technology worldwide.
